SCASS Participation in the Global Space Congress
The Sharjah Center for Astronomy and Space Sciences has actively participated in the Global Space Congress held in Abu Dhabi from March 19th through the 21st, 2019. This Congress in its second round was organized by the UAE Space Agency. SCASS showcased its space sciences research through the participation of all of its research assistants. It was an occasion to meet several space companies to seek potential collaboration in CubeSat development and rockets propulsion systems.
Dr. Ilias Fernini, the Deputy General Director for the Research Laboratories and Observatory, participated in the panel "UAE R&D: Partnerships, Benefits, and Considerations." The panel discussed the roles, activities, and achievements of the space agency and local universities in the Emirates Science and Innovation Group, established in 2016 to consolidate the efforts in the space sector through a series of quarterly workshops. The panelists discussed the role of the local universities and research centers that support the national space program. How does the UAESA align the roles of universities with the national strategic objectives in space? What activities have the universities engaged in to build local capabilities in the UAE in the area of space? Are solicited or unsolicited R&D activities preferred and why? These are a few of the questions addressed by all of the panelists.
