International Asteroid Day Celebration

The Sharjah Academy for Astronomy, Space Sciences, and Technology has organized a special celebration for the International Asteroid Day of June 30, 2019. A rich program of activities was given by Ms. Aisha Al-Owais, Maryam Esa Sharif, and Masa Basel Alnaser, SAASST research assistants. Two lectures and a special contest for the attendees were presented to the students as well as the general public. Dr. Ilias Fernini, the Deputy General Director of the Research Laboratories and Observatory, gave an overview of space debris (meteoroids, meteors, comets, asteroids, and meteorites) and their importance in studying the formation of the solar system. The celebration was also an occasion to display the academy largest collection of meteorites in the world that comprises stony, iron, stony-iron, Martian, and lunar meteorites. This is a scientific treasure that SAASST will use in its quest to explore the solar system and its formation.
